Review: OLLIN Retractable Dog Leash

The OLLIN retractable dog leash is one of the cheapest of its kind, but do the mechanical components compare with similar products? This is “you get what you pay for” product. If you're simply looking for a cheap option, it's great! If you're looking for quality, you'll be better off finding a different leash.

If you're in the market for a retractable dog leash, make sure that your pup is fully leash trained.

OLLIN Retractable Dog LeashThese can be very dangerous to dogs and humans when not used properly. The convenient extension of the leash is nice, as it gives Fido a bit more freedom, but the long extension of these leashes also allows your pet to get far enough away that a situation could quickly get dangerous.

The OLLIN retractable leash, and any other retractable leash, could also cause burns or cuts by the cord if the dog walker tries to grab it. If you're not paying attention and the pup gets to the end of the leash, there's a good chance he could knock you off your feet if he pulls hard enough.

When extended to a long length, your dog could also get tangled in his retractable leash. This could cause serious injury. These types of leashes are not a good choice for every dog.

OLLIN Retractable Dog Leash Review

The first thing you'll notice about this leash is the low price tag. At just $12, this is one of the cheapest retractable dog leashes on the market. At least that's the first thing that I noticed about it.

Now, I like budget friendly items as much as the next guy, but I also look for quality products that will last. I hate spending money to replace something that I bought for a cheaper price.

The outside plastic cover is durable, and I really like the handle. It's ergonomically designed and quite comfortable. I wish the rubber grip was a bit thicker to give it some cushion, but it works well to keep your hand from sliding around.

In my video review above, I demonstrate the size of the handle. You can also see it in the photo above. I have small hands, but this handle allows enough space for someone with large hands to comfortably hold it too.

The retractable nylon belt extends up to 16 feet.

It's tangle free and made with material to reduce the chance of causing burns. I'm sure it would still burn you if you grabbed it tightly. The OLLIN retractable dog leash can support pets up to 50 pounds.

OLLIN Retractable Dog Leash Review

If you're simply looking for a budget friendly retractable leash, this one will get the job done and save you a few bucks too. However, it does have one big flaw. As you'll see in my video review, the brake/lock button doesn't always work the way it's supposed to.

You can see the brake/lock button up close in the photo above. The large part is where you use your thumb to push down for the brake, and the small piece at the top is the lock that hooks under the blue plastic to lock the leash.

OLLIN Retractable Dog Leash ReviewThe problem is that sometimes it brakes, and sometimes it locks. Other times you'll think that it's locked, but with a slight tug on the leash it will come unlocked. I demonstrate this in my video, as I know it's hard to understand without actually seeing it in action.

We live in a rural area, so we're typically the only ones on the trail or road when we walk our dogs. The brake/lock feature isn't a huge deal to me. I just hold it in every time I push it to ensure that my dog can't pull out any more of the leash. It's a bit inconvenient, but for the price I really don't mind.

If the brake/lock feature is one of the main things you're looking for in a retractable leash, then you likely will not be satisfied with the OLLIN retractable dog leash. You'll be better off to spend a bit more for a product with better mechanics.
