Top 5 Best Dog In-Ground Fence Systems

When  you're a dog owner, you want to be both loving and responsible. This means providing your little friend with space to run around, but not run away. If you don't have time or money to start building castle walls in your backyard, wired or wireless dog in-ground fence systems are the ideal way to keep your dog safe.

ATTENTION, dear dog owner. Before you purchase ANY type of electric shock collar or electric fences for your dogs, please take a look at the following articles and strongly consider conclusions drawn by scientific evidence and dog experts:

Electric fences and electric dog training collars have been receiving some heat from dog owners as of late. However, many dog trainers and experts have advocated the use of these shock collars on dogs as long as you purchase a high quality collar and learn how to use it properly. This is key in ensuring that your pet will never be harmed.

This choice is also a small investment compared to what you would pay for cha-ching private fences. Furthermore, in some neighborhoods, they won't even allow you to build a high fence because it will be considered as visual obstruction. Dismissing the idea altogether also wouldn't be a smart choice; you don't really want your dog to just run away into the busy street while chasing a cat, right? That happened.

Here's the list of the best dog in-ground fence systems you can find online today. I suggest buying these things on Amazon because you always get them cheaper than retail and you can compare the reviews of people who already bought the product. PetSafe company dominates this field. As always, let's start with numero uno.

Top 5 Best Dog In-Ground Fence Systems

1. Petsafe PIF-300 Wireless 2-Dog Fence Containment System

The first choice on the list here is in case you have two dogs, and there's no better product out there today than Petsafe PIF-300 Wireless 2-Dog Fence Containment System. PIF-300 in general is the absolute winner in the market for in-ground fences, so you should be confident when buying one for multiple dogs. It has a waterproof receiver, two PIF-275 collars and covers an 180-foot diameter, which should be far enough for most backyards. Check out the reviews!

Lisa's review (read full Amazon reviews): We just bought another regular collar and my husband attached the receiver to the new collar. Another bonus, my brother-in-law also has this wireless fence for his dog and when we go visit (3 hrs away), we only bring our collar and both dogs are free to run around his yard. (Our dog just follows the lead of their dog and somehow “knows” where the boundaries are.) Same goes for when they come visit us! This is the best wireless fence ever!

Jackie Johnson's review (read full Amazon reviews): We bought two systems and 3 collars. saved us THOUSANDS in fencing costs for our 4 dogs (one doesn't need a collar)! We live on 2 1/2 acres and this was a great investment! Took 2 days and they were like new dogs! Our labs love to run when they get the chance.

Official product description: The Pet Safe Wireless Fence pet containment system is a revolutionary concept that provides the safest, simplest form of pet containment ever. Plug in the transmitter somewhere inconspicuous in your home. The transmitter emits a 17.5 kHz radio signal around your home. Your pet wears a lightweight receiver collar that “listens” for the signal. While the collar is receiving the signal, your dog is free to run and play in your yard. When he approaches the boundary of the signal area, he receives a warning beep.

2. PetSafe PIF-300 Wireless Pet Containment System

This product is same as the one above, except it's only for your one and only dog (not two of them). PetSafe PIF-300 Wireless Pet Containment System is the absolute favorite of dog owners, and has been bought tens of thousands of times already with over 800 positive customer reviews left on Amazon. Its wireless radio fence is perfect for dogs weighting above 8 pounds, has a waterproof collar-receiver and covers 180-foot diameter. A definite winner for anybody looking to safe-guard their dog.

J. Brooks's review (read full Amazon reviews): After much research, we are SO HAPPY we chose this product over the traditional in-ground fences! No worries about ruining any wires when we aerate the lawn or do our landscaping… It's a very flexible, cost-effective solution and it works GREAT for our very feisty 2-year-old Schnauzer mix. Highly recommend this product.

C. Hoffman's review (read full Amazon reviews): Another great feature is that it will continue to correct, for 30 seconds, until the dog is back into the safe zone. This was an important feature for me. I have many friends with in ground fences and they've had problems where their dog has bolted through the underground wire fence and then run away. The in ground fence will only correct when the dog passes over the wire in the ground. I couldn't be happier with this product and I want to thank everyone who posted a review to aid my decision to purchase it.

Official product description: The PetSafe Wireless Containment System is a simple, yet effective alternative to traditional outdoor fencing or buried wire fencing. Instead of using spools of boundary wire around your yard, the PIF-300 uses radio frequency to guard your pet against straying. The system is also portable, allowing you to provide a wireless pet area when traveling.

3. PetSafe PIF00-12917 Stay and Play Wireless Fence

A little less popular but just as good is another product from the same company, PetSafe PIF00-12917 Stay and Play Wireless Fence. It's also wireless, which means you don't have to sweat burying anything into the ground. It has a very comfortable and rechargeable receiver collar, which you can charge in about 2.5 hours. Comes with 5 levels of static correction and will easily work with the above mentioned PIF-300 system.

kc932's review (read full Amazon reviews): I have recommended this system to quite a few people. Without this system we probably would have had to put a privacy fence up. I bought this system probably about three or four months ago and so far absolutely no issues at all with it!!

Jason M. Labbe's review (read full Amazon reviews): For us, this product seems to be worth the steep price. A fence would cost us much more and would limit our view of the outdoors. I have a next door neighbor that uses the older model and we have no problem with our signals interfering with one another.

Official product description: The new stay and play wireless fence is a small, rechargeable system that provides an adjustable 3/4 of an acre circular boundary for your pet anywhere you go. The lightweight wireless transmitter is less than half the size of the previous PetSafe wireless fence and has no wires to bury. The waterproof, rechargeable receiver collar is ergonomically designed for your pets comfort, and offers 5 levels of static correction plus a tone-only mode for training. With the ease of setup, this system is perfect for traveling with your pet.

4. Innotek Rechargeable In-Ground Pet Fencing System

Lower on the list is a cheaper option for those who cannot afford the PIF-300 system. Innotek Rechargeable In-Ground Pet Fencing System is still a great buy that comes with a rechargeable receiver which has a 25 acre range, which is absolutely more than you will ever need. Unfortunately, this system isn't wired, but the package already comes with the proper wire to use and even a training DVD. If you can't get the top option, this is definitely a winner for you that costs far less!

pumPnut's review (read full Amazon reviews): It says to charge the battery once a month, but it's lasting almost 2 moths now. The charging takes overnight, but this product has all you need and want, if you are okay with the charging time. Before buying this, i've researched and read zillions of reviews; I'm glad I did.

josecoyote's review (read full Amazon reviews): Trained my dog on it with 3 10 minute sessions per day for 3 days. 1 week of supervise backyard time with no goof ups and he was good to go. Has not violated the fence. The lowest collar setting(of which there are 3) is sufficient for my 50 pounder. No complaints. Would never spend 500 to 600 hundred for a basic set-up installed, when I could do it with a nice system for 170.

Official product description: Innotek. The quicker way to a better behaved dog. Having a better behaved dog has never been quicker or easier. You can spend more time playing and less time training. Innotek electronic training and fencing products have just the right touch, just when you need it. The Products Designed and Supported by Professionals. Innotek products are designed by professionals to be the fastest way to a better behaved dog and they're supported by professionals too!

5. PetSafe PRF-304W Deluxe In-Ground Fence

Last but definitely not least is yet another non-wireless option that comes with 500-feet of wire, VCD and 50 boundary flags. PetSafe PRF-304W Deluxe In-Ground Fence is slightly more expensive that Innotek's product above, but it's still good enough if you – for some reason – don't want the cheaper option. Its receiver offers 4 levels of correction that will match your dog's temperament, will work for pets that are over 8 pounds and the package includes all the instructions (with DVD) on how to setup the whole thing. Check out the reviews!

entropy generator's review (read full Amazon reviews): So far, the collar appears to be waterproof, the dog hops in the pool several time a day. As for training, I recommend following the PetSafe guide closely those first two weeks. My dog has been shocked a total of 5 times over 3 or 4 days and wants no part of the flags, even though his favorite digging spot was in the (now protected) flower bed. He's been within the fence for about a month now. My dog is ~60 lbs, about 9 months old, and is a very active lab/boxer mix that loves to run. There is much peace of mind now, the dog doesn't get yelled at for leaving the yard, and we are happy campers. Now, if I can just keep him from shredding aluminum cans and digging holes in the yard….

Dog owner in Portland's review (read full Amazon reviews): Our 7 month lab was fairly easy to train- starting at the low setting (of 5 levels, the lowest being beep only) on the collar and working up until he noticed it. Took about 2 weeks, and he respects the boundary, but without fear or emotional scars (best we can tell!) One pleasant surprise: The collar will beep first as the dog nears the fence, and if he gets closer, then it zaps him. This was not clear to us from the instructions or the box. Overall very happy with this unit.

Official product description: The most advanced In-Ground dog fence on the market today. Featuring the Deluxe Ultra Light Receiver with 4 levels of progressive correction, if your dog attempts to run through, correction level increases until he turns back. You can increase of decrease the correction to meet your dog's training needs. Also has an anti linger feature and a low battery indicator.
