In the past few years there seems to have been countless recalls on dog food and treats. These recalls have shed much needed light on the topic of pet food ingredients. Because of this, many pet owners are doing more research about the food they are feeding their canine companions. Likewise, products like Charlee Bear Meaty Bites are gaining more attention for their limited ingredient recipes and safe preparation practices.
Freeze drying is a way of preserving food by removing about 98% of its water content. This process preserves the food naturally, while still maintaining its nutritional content, flavor and color.
Freeze dried dog treats are an excellent option for virtually every dog, as long as you know what to look for. Most of these treats are made with a single ingredient: the protein source. Some may have added natural benefits, such as probiotics or natural supplements to aid in specific conditions like hip and joint health.
You'll also want to make sure that the protein source is top-quality and that it is sourced from a country that isn't known for tainted meat. In light of recent recalls, it's best to stay away from products made with ingredients that were sourced in China.
Charlee Bear Meaty Bites Dog Treats Review
These treats are made of raw, freeze-dried meat infused with real fruits or vegetables. They use whole food ingredients. There are no fillers, wheat, corn, soy or grains. Charlee Bear Meaty Bites do not contain any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
As you can see from my video review above, our dogs are big fans of these treats. Our Labrador will eat pretty much anything, and she eats everything very quickly. Sometimes I wonder if she even tastes the food she eats.
Our Beagle is much pickier. She prefers soft treats and dehydrated treats made from 100% meat. She eats everything very slowly. I was pleased to find that she enjoys Charlee Bear Meaty Bites. They're a crunchy treat, but she really seems to like the flavor and texture.
Although there is no information on the company's website or the product's packaging stating where the ingredients are sourced, Charlee Bear does manufacture their products in the United States. Meaty Bites are available in 6 varieties:
- Beef Liver & Apples
- Beef Liver & Sweet Potatoes
- Chicken & Blueberries
- Chicken & Canberries
- Lamb & Blueberries
- Salmon & Sweet Potatoes
I tried the Chicken & Blueberries recipe. You can smell the chicken as soon as you open the package and you can see the blueberries in every treat.
The full list of ingredients in the Chicken & Blueberries recipe is: chicken, blueberries, lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, lactobacillus casei fermentation product, bifidobacterium animalis fermentation product and lactobacillus reuteri fermentation product. This recipe only contains about 6 kcal per treat.
There are about 30-40 dog treats in the 5 ounce package of Meaty Bites. You can purchase a package on Amazon for $12.99. I think this is a very reasonable price considering the quality of the treats and the amount in each package. They are also comparable in price to dog treats made with similar quality ingredients.
