Fresh Dog Food Recipe: A Vegan Option

If you've been doing research on dog food, you've probably already discovered that a nutritionally balanced homemade dog food diet is the healthiest option available. However, when not properly balanced for your dog's unique needs, a homemade diet could be the most detrimental food you could feed him. This fresh dog food recipe won't be suitable for all pets, so check with your veterinarian before feeding it.

There are not many commercial vegan dog food products on the market. For this reason, most pet owners wishing to feed their pooch a vegan food choose to make it at home.

Healthy Fresh Dog Food Recipe - Vegan OptionNote: it is generally not recommended to feed dogs a 100% vegan diet for a prolonged period of time. Before attempting any of these recipes, please consult with your veterinarian or canine nutritionist, and read more about vegan diets for dogs here.

Homemade dog food is made with fresh, high-quality, human-grade ingredients. But, it also takes time to prepare and a lot of research to ensure you're providing all of the nutrients your dog needs in the correct amounts.

If your veterinarian has recommended a vegan diet or you're looking for a fresh dog food recipe to use in your pet's homemade meal rotation, this one may be a good option. It's easy to prepare and made with just 4 ingredients.

Fresh Dog Food RecipeIngredients

  • 1 can black beans (15-ounces)
  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 2/3 cup DRY brown rice
  • 6 kale leaf stems (chopped)

Directions

Drain and rinse the black beans. Pierce the sweet potato, and microwave it for 5 minutes. If it's still a bit firm, put it in the microwave for another 2 minutes.

Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packaging. When the sweet potato has cooled, chop it into bite-size pieces appropriate for your pooch.

I recommend feeding about 1/2 cup for every 15-20 pounds of body weight per serving. This recommendation is for 2 servings per day. For example, if your dog weighs 40-pounds, he should eat about 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening.

You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. You can also make this dog food in larger quantities and freeze leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
