Every dog suffers from diarrhea at one time or another. Because diarrhea is caused by digestive upset, it's important to know how to feed your pet when he's dealing with this health issue. This homemade dog food for diarrhea should not be fed long term, but it should help to get your dog's GI tract back on track.
Diarrhea is usually the result of a minor stomach upset. It's most likely that your dog ate something that didn't agree with him, but it could also be due to an allergic reaction, stress or even a bacteria. Basically, diarrhea is the body’s way to remove toxins and cleanse itself.
Before we discuss the best dog food for diarrhea, you need to know that diarrhea and loose stool could also be the symptom of a more serious health concern. If diarrhea is paired with any of these symptoms:
- fever
- bloating
- lethargy
- blood in the stool
- vomiting
…it is best to consult your veterinarian right away. Multiple symptoms means that it quite likely there is something more serious going on than just a minor digestive upset. If the loose stool has continued for more than 48 hours, a visit to the veterinarian is a must. Your dog could become dehydrated if he has diarrhea for more than 2 days.
As long as the loose stool isn't accompanied by any other symptoms, a couple of meals of this homemade dog food for diarrhea may help to settle the stomach and firm up the stool. You can even feed a small amount as a snack a few times per day to help get Fido's GI tract back on track.

Homemade Dog Food for Diarrhea Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 1/2 cup UNCOOKED white rice
- 2 tbsp. live culture plain yogurt
- 1 large boneless skinless chicken breast
Directions
This limited ingredient dog food recipe is very easy to prepare. First, cook the rice according to the instructions on the box. While the rice is cooking, boil the chicken. When the chicken is fully cooked, shred it into bite-size pieces appropriate for your dog.
Now, mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. That's it! It's that simple.
Once the rice and chicken have cooled, you can feed this homemade dog food for diarrhea to your pet. As I mentioned, this isn't a food that should be fed long term. It is not nutritionally balanced, and your dog will become much sicker if you feed this to him for more than a couple of days.
The best thing to do is mix this homemade dog food for diarrhea with his regular meals. Mix 70% of this recipe with 30% of his regular food. If you do this for a couple of days, the diarrhea should clear up.
You could also feed your dog about 50% of his regular meal at his regular feeding time, and then supplement his diet with a few snacks of this recipe throughout the day. You don't want to feed him his normal diet and multiple snacks of this recipe, because it will raise his calorie count for the day much too high.
You can store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can also make this food in advance and store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
