If you have a small breed dog, it's likely that you carry him around from time to time. Sometimes, it is just for short trips out to the car, but sometimes, it's nice to carry your pet around with you when you go on adventures. Dog carriers and dog backpacks, like the one in this K9 Sport Sack review, make it easy to bring your canine companion with you wherever you go.
Backpacks are much easier to carry than dog carriers that you need to lug by hand. You need to select a backpack that fits you and one that your pup will be comfortable in. You also need to think about your physical abilities. How much does your dog weigh? Will you be comfortable carrying that much weight on your back during a walk or hike?
I have been testing the K9 Sport Sack for dogs for about a month now. At first I thought it was kind of silly to carry your dog around in a backpack. However, after a few weeks with this product, I knew it was going to be a huge help for me and a great benefit to our Beagle/Cocker Spaniel mix, Molly.
K9 Sport Sack Dog Backpack Review
We love to go hiking with our dogs, but I was worried when we got Molly. I didn't think she would be able to keep up. Molly is the first small breed we've ever had, so it's been a bit of a learning experience. We found out quickly that her little legs held her back from doing many of the things our boxer and chocolate lab love to do.
It wouldn't be fair to take the big dogs along and leave poor little Molly home alone, but what else could we do? Enter the doggy backpack from K9 Sport Sack. I felt a little foolish the first couple of times we used this doggy backpack, but the more we used it, the more I fell in love. Molly felt the same way!
I started out gradually by just leaving the backpack on the floor and letting her sniff it. Once she was comfortable with the new smell, I put her inside. She was a bit timid at first, but I think the ergonomic design of this backpack helped to ease her anxiety. She was comfortable, and it didn't take her very long to settle in.
As you can see in my video review, Molly loves riding in the K9 Sport Sack now. She sits in there and looks around while I walk and doesn't fidget at all. She really enjoys it!
This dog backpack is made with a lightweight, waterproof canvas material. We love to go hiking with our dogs. We usually let Molly walk a little ways by herself, and then when she gets tired or the terrain gets too difficult for her, I put her in the K9 Sport Sack. It easily rolls up to fit inside a hiking pack or small day bag, making it ideal for travel, too.
The shoulder and chest straps adjust easily, and it's very comfortable. I've only carried Molly in this for about an hour consecutively, but I had no shoulder fatigue or pain. There is also a collar strap to secure your pet and adjustment straps on both sides to allow you to fit the sports sack to your pet's body type.
The many adjustable straps are great! Molly is only 4 months old, so when I first received the K9 Sport Sack I cinched them all the way in, and now I can adjust them as she grows.
The side mesh panels of the K9 Sport Sack keep your dog cool, and the bag is well-ventilated. There is also a convenient side pocket that is perfect for holding your cell phone, car keys, or a water bottle.
As you'll see in my video K9 Sport Sack review, it's easy to put your dog in this backpack, too.
There are two small slots at the top of the pack that your dog's legs will easily slide through.
I found that the easiest way to secure your pet was to slip his legs through the slots, secure the collar around his neck, and then pull the zipper closed. The zipper runs the length of the backpack – from the base of your pet's tail to his neck.
I was very impressed with the durability and the quality of the materials used to make the K9 Sport Sack. There is padding on the bottom of the pack for your pet's comfort, and the material that the product is made from cannot be easily ripped by your dog's toenails. The stitching is durable as well.
I‘m confident that we'll have this backpack for many years. It's very well made.
The K9 Sport Sack comes in four sizes. Measuring your dog for this product needs to be done properly. It's pretty simple, but I found it much easier to do when there was another person holding the dog.
If you have your helper sit your dog in the begging position, as you can see on the right, you'll need to measure your pet from the base of his tail to wear his collar to sit on his neck.
The K9 Sport Sack is available in the following sizes:
- Extra Small – 10 to 14 inch back
- Small – 14 to 17 inch back
- Medium – 17 to 20 inches
- Large – 20 to 23 inches
All sizes are available for $59.95. They do offer an easy exchange program if need be, and you can also purchase a booster block for an additional $7.95. The booster block takes up 2 inches of space in the bottom of the backpack, so it's ideal if your dog doesn't fit any of the measurements perfectly.
