Review: Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door Dog Kennel (2021)

Plastic dog crates may not be the most attractive option out there, but they are certainly one of the most popular.

They are more private than traditional metal wire crates and also look less like a “cage”.

Not all plastic dog kennels are created equally, and it's important that you choose a sturdy model.

The Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door Dog Kennel stands out from similar products for a number of reasons.

Many plastic dog crates come in two pieces – a top and bottom – made of thin plastic material that are attached together with bolts.

Dogs that are too rambunctious or try to escape when enclosed in a crate can easily ruin these types of crates.

Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door KennelThe thin plastic used to manufacture these kinds of kennels will crack if your dog uses enough force when trying to get out.

Likewise, if Fido thrashes around enough, the bolts that secure the kennel could become stripped. This would render the crate completely useless.

Finding a plastic crate that is molded out of one solid piece of plastic can be challenging. There aren't very options available, but Ruff Tough Kennels offers multiple options.

The company focuses on strength and durability, for dog owners that only one kennel will last as long as their dog needs it.

I like the idea behind the Ruff Tough Kennels, but I wasn't sure if they would actually be worth the cost.

I wanted to check out Ruff Tough Kennels and see how they held up with our dogs. I'm sharing all the pros and cons of these dog crates in my detailed review below.

Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door Dog Kennel Review

Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door KennelAs I mentioned, these kennels are molded out of thick, extra-durable plastic (UV stabilized polyethylene, to be exact).

This means they boast a one-piece construction that would be extremely difficult for your dog to break. They are also made in the U.S.A.

The Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door Kennel is only available in one size.

The outer dimensions are 30.5″L x 21.5″W x 22.5″H, and the interior dimensions are 30″L x 19.5″W x 22″H. But, you can find other dog crates of varying sizes on the company's website.

Ruff Tough KennelsI love the one-piece construction. This is absolutely the most durable plastic dog kennel that I've ever use!

However, the thicker plastic and one-piece construction also make the kennel heavier than other crates the same size. It weighs about 25 pounds.

This means that it might be a little difficult to bring this crate from Ruff Tough Kennels along while traveling. But, if you can manage it, you can also order a tie-down kit that will keep the crate secure while traveling.

This makes the Intermediate Single Door Kennel a great option for kenneling hunting dogs.

Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door KennelThe crates are also stackable and have been impact tested to ensure your dog is safe in the event of an accident.

There are other accessories available as well, including coupler kits, kennel fans, door covers and handle kits. There are metal inserts molded into the crate, so you can add all of these accessories very easily.

The hard plastic is easy to clean, but if your puppy or adult dog is prone to accidents you may want to find a crate with a removable pan underneath.

You can just wipe Ruff Tough Kennels out with a damp cloth or clean them with bleach water to sanitize the kennel if your dog has an accident.

The Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door Kennel is available in 5 colors:

  • white speckled
  • rockstone (tan)
  • orange speckled
  • lime green speckled
  • pink speckled (the crate shown in my review)

Ruff Tough Kennels Intermediate Single Door KennelIn my photos, you can see the vent hole pattern that runs down both sides of the kennel. The holes are 1 3/8″ in diameter.

If you think your rambunctious dog will try to put his paws through these holes, I would recommend a different kennel. You don't Fido to get his paw stuck and hurt himself.

As you can see in my video review above, one of my favorite features of this crate is the fact that the door can open to the left or the right.

There are squeezable latches on either side of the door that allow you to open it whichever way is most suitable for the situation and location of the kennel.

Ruff Tough Kennels are a little more expensive than other plastic dog crates, but that's expected because of the superior quality and design.

You can purchase the Intermediate Single Door Kennel on Amazon right now for $$284.39.

However, you can also buy them on the company's website for a cheaper price.
