Winter is here which means that for many pet parents it’s time to invest in winter wear for dogs. There's an abundance of choices we have – some are warmer but less comfortable for the dog, while others may not protect your pup from subfreezing temperatures. So today we’ve compiled a list of 50 best dog winter clothes to help you to build up your dog’s winter wardrobe and keep them warm all season long.

You may think that your pup doesn't need clothes for winter, but the opposite is true, according to canine experts. Health and social services issue warnings every November and December about the dangers of cold winter weather, and essential tips for protecting dogs when temperatures drop. Veterinarians from the Texas' VetMed University advise all owners to pick at least a warm sweater and booties for the dog, but also to be careful about proper use of dog winter clothes. Dr. Christine Fletcher, DVM in an article for NPR explained why it's important to pay attention to shivering dogs and provide them with proper clothing.

In this article, we'll take a look at dog sweaters and insulated jackets, raincoats, dog boots and paw protection wear, goggles and scarfs, dog ear and neck warmers, parkas, pajamas and plenty of other best dog winter clothes that pet owners can choose from. Your choice of doggie winter wear type depends on your specific dog: size, coat, age and current health conditions. It also depends where you plan to spend time and the environment your pup is going to be in, including weather (snow, ice, rain) and temperature.

The 50 Best Dog Winter Clothes
(jackets, scarfs, boots, sweaters, pajamas and more)

Gooby Every Day Fleece Cold Weather Dog Vest for Small Dogs

Price: $9.99
Get It Here

A small dog coat from Gooby, this is a lightweight fleece jacket that is ideal for those days leading up to winter or for those of you who are lucky enough to have mild winters. We love that these winter dog vests come in a very large range of colors but the one thing we’re not sure about is the D-ring for leash attachment on the back. If your dog is a puller, we don’t recommend relying on this ring to secure your dog because it’s likely to break in no time at all. Instead, either do not use it or pick another type of winter clothes for dogs and use a no-pull dog harness (or a safe dog collar) for walking your pup.

Ruffwear Grip T-rex

Price: $37.50
Get It Here

If you have milder winters and are in search of winter dog shoes that aren’t too warm but still provide a good grip on ice or snow, the Ruffwear Grip T-rex is worth looking into. Of course, you know that we love the Ruffwear brand because of their quality and durability – and we have tested and reviewed a number of Ruffwear dog supplies here on Top Dog Tips before – but we also love that in warmer climates, these dog boots can be worn year round whether you’re on a cooler winter hike or a warmer summer adventure. Plus, you can snag these affordable dog shoes (for Ruffwear brand) in a range of three unique colors.

Doggles Originalz Frame Goggles

Price: $20.89
Get It Here

If we're picking a whole range of best dog winter clothes, then eye protection is a must to mention. Many pet parents don’t think twice about the glare from snow when it comes to their dogs. The same blinding brightness that shocks us on snowy winter days is just as shocking to your dog, but with the right equipment – Doggles – you can keep your dog’s vision protected and avoid them squinting on those winter walks. What do we love most about Doggles? They block 100% of UV rays and have a shatterproof lens – what’s not to like?

Zoo Snoods Grizzly Bear

Price: $24.99
Get It Here

There are several dog neck warmer options on this list, we know that you'll probably love the dinosaur Zoo Snood mentioned below on this best dog winter clothes list, but we couldn’t help ourselves from featuring the bear version of this dog neck and ear warmer too. Available in three sizes, this snood fits virtually any breed and made from super soft yarn, they are comfortable for every pup to wear. We also love that Zoo Snoods offers a 100% money back guarantee because, well, what’s not to like about company's confidence in their products?

HAPEE Diamond Plaid Dog Sweater

Price: $13.99
Get It Here

If you're looking for a light winter dog sweater for indoor winter wear or for milder winter climates, this argyle and delicate looking sweater is a good pick. A more traditional sweater print, we like this one for your serious pups who need a little extra coverage and prefer to look more formal. Although it’s available in a variety of colors, we like the navy, white and gray. What we like best about this classic sweater though, and it's definitely one of our favorites among best dog winter clothes on here, is that it has longer arms than many of the other sweaters on our list so it will keep your pup’s legs nice and warm.

Chilly Dog White/Red Pet Scarf

Price: $12.99
Get It Here

A lot of the winter accessories on our best dog winter clothes list are designed for smaller breeds, and this is simply because smaller breeds require additional winter coverage. We did, however, manage to spot this red and white winter scarf that’s designed to fit large dogs over 40lbs. Made from 100% wool, this is a gorgeous and whimsical piece, although if you have an allergy-prone dog, you might be best steering clear of anything made from natural animal fibers.

Ruffwear Quinzee Warm, Lightweight Insulated Jacket

Price: $79.95
Get It Here

Another quality selection from the popular Ruffwear’s winter line, the Quinzee jacket is a thinner lightweight winter jacket that’s ideal for milder winters. What we like most about this insulated dog jacket is the easy release buckles on the sides of the jacket that make putting it on and taking it off so much simpler than having your dog step into the leg holes and trying to zip up their jacket without getting fur caught in the zipper! Oh, plus, you can pick this jacket up in a range of sizes from XX-Small through to X-Large. That said, it's one of the most expensive pieces of best dog winter clothes on our list.

GOOBY Winter Wind Breaker Dog Parka

Price: $29.22
Get It Here

Gooby is another brand of outerwear that we trust and rely on for our dogs (and many other pet owners do too, according to their reviews on Amazon), but a large portion of this company's products are targeted towards smaller dogs, so if you’re a big dog family, you’re going to be limited in your selection. This dog winter windbreaker is a small dog jacket that comes in seven different colors and it provides full body protection and a hood, which is a rare option among best dog winter clothes listed here. We love that the outer layer of this coat is waterproof and that it’s a hardwearing choice of doggy winterwear.

Foreyy Reflective Dog Fleece Coat

Price: $13.99
Get It Here

Warm enough for mild winters and perfectly reflective for afternoon and night walks, this dog fleece jacket is designed for small to medium breeds. Comfortable for your dog to wear and easy to put on, you can get this dog coat in a range of colors to suit your and your Fido's taste. Although the fleece of this jacket keeps in warmth, it isn’t ideal for wet winter weather, so keep this in mind if your area is prone to sleet or a lot of snow.

Fitwarm Knitted Thermal Dog Pajamas

Price: $16.99
Get It Here

If you find yourself living in a ridiculously cold climate this winter season, you should consider investing in these thermal dog pajamas for your small to medium sized breed dog. Although the knitted fabric of these winter dog pajamas is thick, it’s also incredibly soft so you don’t have to worry about your dog feeling uncomfortable – they’re just going to be nice and cozy. What we really love about these pajamas (aside from the fact that they’re dog pajamas!) is that the legs each have elastic cuffs to keep the legs of the pajamas in place, which is a unique option.

Blueberry Pet Chic Dog Sweater

Price: $20.99
Get It Here

Blueberry Pet has a range of winter dog sweaters available for your pooch, but this two-pack of sweaters is our favorite (price-for-quality-and-quantity being one of the factors). It comes with one solid brown sweater and one green, orange, blue, and black striped sweater, both of which have a leash attachment point and a high knitted neck to keep in warmth. We love that these sweaters are long sweaters that cover all the way from your dog’s neck to the base of their tail ensuring that your dog stays protected against the winter cold!

Fitwarm Polka Dots Fleece Dog Pajamas

Price: $12.99
Get It Here

Another great pair of pajamas on our list of best dog winter clothes is from Fitwarm, and these fleece dog pajamas are a cozy solution to those cold winter nights. Ideal for your hairless pups or thinly coated dogs on chilly winter nights, these pet pajamas keep all four legs covered and cotton cuffs make sure that those pajama legs stay in place. These pajamas are only sized for smaller breeds, but we certainly recommend them for warmth and for their low price point!

SILD Dog Jacket

Price: $9.99
Get It Here

Big dog parents give praise because we’ve found an affordably priced winter jacket for large dogs! The SILD dog jacket is designed for dogs with up to a 28.3” neck circumference and comes in a nice range of colors. Designed to protect against snow and water, we love how easy the outside of this jacket is to keep clean while the plush interior is great for keeping in dog's body heat on those colder days. Have we mentioned, yet, that this jacket costs less than $10?!

Dog Christmas Sweater

Price: $13.49
Get It Here

No list of best dog winter clothes can go with the infamous sweater. So if your family has a tradition of Christmas sweaters, why not include your dog in on the fun too? We love this cable knit dog sweater in blue and red because it’s not your fad type of ugly dog Christmas sweater, rather it’s a little more understated. Available with a back length of 12” to 20”, this elastic knitted sweater is warm enough for indoor winter temperatures or for milder winter days!

Ruffwear Polar T-rex Winter Traction and Insulation Paw Wear

Price: $99.95
Get It Here

When it comes to winter footwear for dogs, once again, our go-to brand is Ruffwear. Their products are high-quality and durable and they have a nice selection of winter dog boots for all weather conditions, but they're also the most expensive brand on this list of best dog winter clothes. Specifically, we love their Polar T-rex boots for winter because they have a weatherproof exterior while the insulated interior keeps paws nice and toasty. We also love the thick gripped sole that makes sure your pup’s feet are protected from those pesky ice clumps that take hold between toes!

Bryn Winter Scarf and Hat Set

Price: $14.99
Get It Here

Available in burgundy and gray, this hat and scarf set is an adorable addition to your small dog’s winter wardrobe. We love this unique set because it’s really soft and it also keeps your dog nice and warm during those quicker winter walks and potty breaks. We’re not entirely sure if it's always practical to have a dog scarf on when you’re walking your dog (in fact, it's not always practical) but the hat will keep your dog’s head toasty warm and the matching scarf is more of an added bonus.

Zoo Snoods Dinosaur Dog Neck Ear Warmer

Price: $14.99
Get It Here

If you liked the above mentioned Bear dog ear warmer, then you'll love this one too. Zoo Snoods have to be one of our all-time favorite dog winter wear product lines because they’re cute as well as practical. These knitted snoods come with a novelty theme, but they fit snugly over your dog’s ears and neck and stop that biting winter wind from giving your dog a chill. We particularly like this product for dogs with “rose” ears or perked or semi-perked ears that are easily chilled during colder temperatures. While the dinosaur version of the Zoo Snood is our favorite, you can also choose from a bear mentioned above on this best dog winter clothes list and there's also a fox one if you prefer.

Migohi Reflective Waterproof Windproof Dog Coat

Price: $15.99
Get It Here

If you live in a warmer climate where winters aren’t too harsh or if your dog just needs a little extra warmth during winter, this light dog winter coat is a good option. Made from reflective waterproof material, it provides protection from damp winter sleet and is suitable for night time walking. This isn’t the warmest pet coat, but it’s a solidly made intermediate option that comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Ruffwear Insulated K-9 Overcoat

Price: $64.95
Get It Here

Yet another expensive Ruffwear winter dog clothes item, and we can’t deny that this is a pricey investment, but if you’re looking for the best of the best, then the Ruffwear insulated K-9 overcoat for dogs is it. The abrasion-resistant surface makes it ideal for pups who like to run and investigate while out on walks while the fleece lining keeps your dog insulated against the cold! We also love that this jacket is available in six different sizes and is made to fit most dogs (even your bigger pups!)

Beirui Christmas Cute Fleece Dog Jacket

Price: $13.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for a winter dog coat that has the novelty factor as well as warmth, we pick the Beirui jacket. Made from fleece, this dog jacket comes with a hood to keep your dog’s neck and head warm during those colder trips out to potty. Plus, it’s a reasonably priced choice among the other best dog winter clothes choices listed. Although we love the pattern, warmth, and price, there are a couple of things we’re not in love with when it comes to this coat – the sizing is limited to smaller dogs and it’s not waterproof so it’s not ideal for walking in the snow!

PAWZ Road Winter Coat

Price: $12.99
Get It Here

If we had to choose one dog winter jacket from our best dog winter clothes list that is perfectly adorable and functional, the PAWZ road winter coat for dogs is our choice. Available in brown, green, and red, this jacket is more of a jumpsuit that covers all four of your dog’s legs while still leaving those important areas uncovered. We love the fur lined hood and quality construction, but what we love most about this coat is that it has solid snaps to keep the jacket closed rather than Velcro that wears quickly.

Hoxekle 4pcs Waterproof Winter Pet Dog Shoes

Price: $15.99
Get It Here

If your dog has chilly feet when indoors or just has trouble gripping your hardwood floors that tend to get slippery during winter, these soft winter dog booties could be what you’re looking for. The thick Sherpa interior keeps your dog’s feet toasty warm while the non-slip texture on the bottom of the shoes help your dog to grip slippery floors. What we like most about these booties for dogs though, is that hard-soled boots can be hard to fit to your dog’s feet and uncomfortable for them to wear, but these drawstring booties are simple to fit and comfortable to wear.

Adorable Anti-Slip Dog Shoes

Price: $18.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for a dog shoe that’s halfway between the hard-sole boot and the softer bootie, these shoes are the top pick for us. The thick rubber sole is ideal for walking outdoors and keeping out the cold, but the waterproof and flexible exterior is soft enough to make putting these shoes on easy. These dog boots do run small, but they also come in seven different sizes, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding a pair to fit your pup. The only thing we don’t care for with these winter dog boots is that they’re hand wash only.

Winter Soft Snow Boots

Price: $17.96
Get It Here

These are possibly the cutest winter dog boots you will find for your pup on our best dog winter clothes list, or anywhere, really. The design mimics those puffer jackets and comes in five different colors so you have plenty to choose from. The outside of the boots is easy to wipe clean and the sole is thick enough to give your dog a grip on just about any surface. The one thing we don’t care for in this brand of boot is that their sizing is very peculiar. Although the boots are available in sizes XS through XL, the XL size is only 2.36” in length and 1.88” in width which, if you’re wondering, isn’t large enough for the average Labrador retriever.

Waterproof Breathable Winter Cotton Boots

Price: $27.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for a solid “middle of the road” winter dog boot that has a thick sole, a soft exterior, and a sock neck to keep those boots on, these boots fit the bill. Flexible enough to put on your dog easily, we love that this boot has reflective straps in two locations to ensure that they stay on securely even when your pup gets the zoomies in the snow! We also like that these boots are true to size which can be tricky to find when you’re shopping for dog boots.

Pawz Winter Vest

Price: $15.99
Get It Here

This vest is one of the thicker vests on our list of best dog winter clothes and it’s a solid choice for cooler winters for dogs with a chest circumference of up to 29.9 inches and a neck of 21.3 inches. Although it’s warm, we love that this vest is lightweight enough to be comfortable for wear while your dog is active. We also love that the price of this jacket is so reasonable, we just wish it was available in slightly larger sizes for our giant breeds!

Pink Bunny Hoodie

Price: $14.99
Get It Here

If you’re a fan of the Christmas Story movie, then you may recognize the novelty of the pink bunny hoodie. We love this dog winter jacket for more than just this novelty, though. Made just for smaller pups, this jacket is nice and warm to insulate against those cold temperatures, although it’s not ideal for snow and slush because it’s not waterproof. We also like that this dog hoodie comes with a 100% quality guarantee so that you can be confident in your purchase.

Reversible Windproof Winter Coat

Price: $22.99
Get It Here

It can be difficult to find winter coats for dogs that fit your larger breed, but this coat is available for dogs with up to a 41” chest circumference. This is also a waterproof dog winter coat option that is reversible, which is rare among the rest of best dog winter clothes options, and you can choose from an orange and blue coat or a blue and green coat. We’re partial to the orange just because it’s a little more visible for those chilly spring mornings too.

Winter Dog Princess Dress

Price: $19.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for warm but formal winterwear for your dog for the holiday season, we can’t help but recommend this fluffy and frilly dog dress. Made from velour, the dress is comfortable for your dog as well as being adorable to look at and it’s great for keeping in body heat too. Although it’s warm, we wouldn’t recommend this dog dress-coat for any type of physical activity – it’s more of a photo prop or a coat to wear while traveling in mom’s purse. You should keep in mind when buying this pet jacket that it does run small, so you may want to size up.

Stripes Knitted Scarf, Hat and Leg Warmer Set

Price: $9.89
Get It Here

If your budget is stretched thin already this winter season, and many of these best dog winter clothes seem unaffordable (particularly Ruffwear) then this striped three-piece winter wear set is a steal at less than $10. It comes with leg warmers to keep those older joints insulated against the cold, a scarf to keep your dog’s neck warm, and a hat to keep your dog’s head nice and toasty when the temperatures drop. The one thing that you should be aware of is that there are no standard sizes for this type of winter wear, so it’s always best to measure your pup before buying this set!

Besazw Dog Jacket

Price: $17.99
Get It Here

Another winter jacket for small dogs, the Besazw jacket is a great choice for longer bodied dogs. What we love most about this pet jacket though, is that it’s a ventilated jacket that is both waterproof and has antibacterial properties. We also love that the neck of this jacket comes up quite high so it works well for keeping heat held against the body. The only thing we’re not too sure about with this coat is that the closure is Velcro which can become hard to fasten over time when it gets coated with dog hair!

Bingpet Knit Christmas Scarf and Hat

Price: $11.99
Get It Here

Another affordable and adorable addition to your dog’s winter wardrobe on our best dog winter clothes list, this winter hat and scarf set is the perfect choice for those very chilly winter walks. We love that the hat has a toggle tie under the chin to keep it in place and make sure that your dog’s head stays nice and warm. We also love just how soft this hat and scarf set is making it comfortable and cozy for your dog to wear.  Unlike some hat and scarf sets, you’ll find that this one comes in three sizes, although we should note that the larger size is better suited to a smaller poodle-like breed rather than a Rottweiler.

Reindeer Dog Hoodie Coat

Price: $18.99
Get It Here

Consider this another cute and cozy option for your small to medium sized dog this winter. The warm polar fleece jacket is ideal for holding in body heat while the hood with reindeer “antlers” is just too cute. Although this coat is available in sizes up to extra large, it’s important to know that the extra large coat is still only designed for dogs with a neck circumference of around 14.2” which means that, once again, our big breeds are excluded (sorry guys!)

Dog Flapjack Onesie by LazyOne

Price: $18.99
Get It Here

We can’t say enough just how much we love the LazyOne brand because they don’t just make dog pajamas – they make family pajama sets. That means that you and your better half, your two-legged kids and your four-legged kids can all have matching pajamas this winter as you sit by the fire! This cute four-legged pajama set even has a little flap on the butt to look like the real thing…although we don’t recommend trying to use it for “traditional” purposes not least because it’s in the wrong place!

CuteBone Dog Pajamas

Price: $11.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for dog pajamas for your pup that don’t have fleece inside but are still cozy enough for winter nights, these pajamas are right up your alley. We like these pajamas for those dogs that need just a little extra coverage but who can quickly overheat with too much cover. We also love that these pajamas has a “bad dog” print of skulls and crossbones rather than a feminine frilly print like you find on so many other pajama sets.

Pupteck Classic Cable Knit Dog Sweater

Price: $8.99
Get It Here

The Pupteck classic cable knit sweater is a cozy winter sweater for smaller to small-medium sized dogs. Available in brown and pink, we like the overall quality of this sweater and the classic design, but we do wish that the “masculine” color was something other than brown. This sweater even includes a small hole on the back to attach your dog’s leash and it's one of the cheaper best dog winter clothes options here.

Mikayoo Large Dog Raincoat

Price: $19.99
Get It Here

Although a raincoat can be used year round, it’s a great investment for snowy climates too. Best paired with a warmer sweater or vest for dogs that chill easily, this dog raincoat provides plenty of protection against winter snow and sleet. We love that this lightweight waterproof dog jacket comes complete with two large reflective strips for night safety and has multiple adjustment points to get the best fit possible for your dog.

Pet Skull Sweater

Price: $10.98
Get It Here

This sweater is designed for the dog that isn’t suited to frills or preppy cable-knit – it’s covered in skulls and crossbones. Made from 100% acrylic we like that this dog sweater isn’t itchy like some of those made from natural fibers we've mentioned on our best dog winter clothes list; plus, you can throw this one in a cold wash without having to commit to handwashing another piece of clothing! Keep in mind with this sweater, though, that even the extra-large sweater is designed for dogs under 45lbs.

Fitwarm Christmas Party Knitted Dress

Price: $12.99
Get It Here

This winter pattern dress is perfect for your Christmas card photo shoot, your Christmas party, or for the dog who likes to ride in mom’s purse, but we don’t recommend it for outdoor activity because while it’s warm, it’s not waterproofed so it will quickly get wet and become heavy and uncomfortable. We still love this one for indoor wear though, but let’s face it, who wouldn’t love that little bobble hat.

Tooth & Honey Dog Sweater

Price: $38.00
Get It Here

This might seem like a pricey investment for a sweater for your dog, especially compared to cheaper best dog winter clothes options mentioned, but if you have a larger breed with a thicker or longer neck, then you will know how difficult this type of fit can be to find. The Tooth & Honey dog sweater has an extended neck to ensure that your dog’s neck is kept warm while the body of the sweater ensures that your dog has enough room and doesn’t feel squeezed tightly or uncomfortable! Referred to as a “turtleneck”, you can get this sweater large enough to fit dogs up to around 85lbs which is next to impossible to find!

Le Petit Chien Handmade Knitwear Soft Sweater

Price: $14.95
Get It Here

Another take on the traditional cable knit sweater design, this warm acrylic dog sweater also has a turtleneck designed to keep your pup extra warm on those cooler days. What we love most about this sweater is that unlike majority of other best dog winter clothes mentioned it’s handmade and it comes in a wide range of colors and patterns so you can fill out your dog’s wardrobe for winter.

Chilly Dog Tattooed Mom Dog Sweater

Price: $34.99
Get It Here

If you’re looking for a dog winter sweater that’s just a little bit edgy, this is it. Designed with a traditional tattoo look, this sweater is made from 100% wool so it’s nice and warm. We don’t recommend this one for wet winters, though, since wool doesn’t do so well in wet weather, and there other other best dog winter clothes choices to pick from instead. We do love that this sweater for dogs is dyed with organic plant dyes though.

MaruPet Winter Waterproof Windproof Reversible Dog Vest

Price: $15.99
Get It Here

This puffer design dog jacket makes our list of best dog winter clothes not only because it’s cute and can match your own winter puffer jacket, but also because it’s incredibly cozy and warm. Unlike sweaters, this jacket can quickly be wiped clean and it stands up well in sleet and snow without getting stinky or showing signs of wear. Just be sure that when you measure your dog for this jacket, you measure them for a loose fitting garment.

Monkey Hoodie Dog Sweater

Price: $29.99
Get It Here

We happen to know a certain terrier who is affectionately referred to as “Monkey” and while he doesn’t NEED a dog sweater during winter months, we have to admit to being tempted by this dog hoodie. Made from 100% wool, this isn’t an ideal sweater for your wetter climates, but it is a good option for a cooler home or cool but dry winter climate.

Lonsuneer Paw Protector Dog Boots

Price: $16.67
Get It Here

When it comes to affordable dog boots, it can be tricky to find a set of four that work with a shoestring budget. These Lonsuneer boots for dogs in winter, however, are just the ticket. For under $17, you get a set of four boots that have a soft but non-slip sole and are reflective enough for safe night time walking and they're one of the cheapest dog shoes on our list of best dog winter clothes list. What we like most about these boots, though, is that they’re simple to put on and they actually stay on!

Sweet Dreams Thermal Cotton Pajamas

Price: $19.99

If your dog gets a little chilly at night but isn’t well suited to fleece because they sometimes get overheated, these thermal dog pajamas are a great go-to solution. Available in four different colors and four different sizes, these thermal pajamas are just like the thermals you wear yourself on those chilly winter nights.

Chilly Dog Peppermint Hoodie

Price: $32.73
Get It Here

We love this hooded dog sweater for the more festive occasions because it’s just very… whimsical. Made from 100% wool, this pet sweater is thin but warm. What we love the most about this particular option and what makes it better than some other best dog winter clothes choices above, however, is that each of these peppermint hoodies is hand knit by Quechan Indians. Handmade dog products are rare today.

UHeng Pet Dog Sweater Vintage Clothes Pompon

Price: $11.99

Does your family have an ugly Christmas sweater exchange? If so then why not bring your dog in on the fun with their very own ugly Christmas sweater? There are so many things that we love about this acrylic sweater, but what we particularly like more than anything is that goofy little elf body that makes your dog look like an elf/dog hybrid.

As the last pick among the best dog winter clothes, we've got another fairly affordable pet sweater. Made from 100% acrylic, this is a sweater that’s less likely to make your smaller dogs itch. Plus, this sweater is machine washable so that you’re not having to handwash any more clothing!
